The Truth about Fluoride
Fluoride is a known toxic substance that interferes with many fundamental
biochemical functions. It interferes with and inhibits many enzymes, and causes
oxidative stress. Fluoride interferes with the transmission of messages across cell
membranes, and alters gene expression.
Hidden sources of fluoride abound, and damage is cumulative. Aluminum
potentiates fluoride toxicity, and vice versa. For example, in the presence of
fluoride, leaching of aluminum from cookware is increased by as much as 1000
Fluoride at concentrations found in municipal drinking water has been shown to
damage thyroid tissue. Other environmental toxins that depress thyroid gland
and hormone function include PCBs, dioxins, DDT, phthalates, etc.
Charcoal filters such as Brita do not remove fluoride from water.
Fluoridation of public water supplies is unethical, as who gets the medication
cannot be controlled, nor can the dose be controlled. Furthermore, no doctor
has prescribed this medication, nor is individual response or exposure tracked. In
addition, the chemicals used in municipal water are not pharmaceutical grade but
rather are a waste product from the phosphate fertilizer industry.
In the US, typical ranges of fluoride in municipal water are 0.7 to 1.2 ppm. The
maximum level of fluoride in breast milk is 0.004 ppm. Therefore a bottle fed
baby can easily get 30000% of the dose of fluoride a breast fed baby gets. The
fact that nature controls the amount of fluoride in breast milk is evidence that
fluoride is not a beneficial compound for babies.
A pea sized amount of toothpaste contains about as much fluoride as is in a
large glass of municipal water. The directions on toothpaste explicitly state: “Do
not swallow” and “If more than used for brushing is accidentally swallowed, get
medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away”. So what should one
do if someone accidentally ingests more than 1 large glass of municipal water?
According to WHO data, tooth decay rates are falling just as quickly in countries
that do not fluoridate their water compared with countries that do. Many other
studies have found no relation between tooth decay and amount of fluoride
ingested. Any benefits of fluoride are topical at best, and there are no benefits
whatsoever to systemic fluoride ingestion. Tooth decay is better correlated with
sugar intake and lack of brushing than fluoride intake.
Harmful effects of systemic fluoride include: dental fluorosis (the fluoride ion
replaces the hydrogen ion on calcium hydroxyl apatite crystals in teeth and
bone.), bone damage (increased brittleness and arthritis symptoms), decreased
thyroid function, brain damage, and accumulation in the pineal gland. There
was also a 5 to 7 fold increase in osteosarcoma development due to exposure
to fluorinated water in a study done with young boys. Published studies from
around the world indicate that fluoride exposure is associated with lowered IQ of
5 to 10 points for all age ranges studied in children.
